Driving with Low Fuel

Ever notice you need gas but think you have enough to get home so you keep driving? We’ve all been there, but did you know that could cause severe problems to your car’s fueling system?  It could cause damage or premature failure to your fuel pump and other components. Fuel system components are expensive!  Let’s go over how to avoid causing failure to your fuel system due to low fuel.

How it Hurts Your Fuel System

If you were to look inside your fuel tank, you will find the fuel pump submerged in fuel. Starting the car sends fuel from the tank forward through metal lines, to the fuel filter. From the filter, the lines lead to the injectors that supply the combustion chamber with fuel. As the car runs this fuel pump gets hotter and hotter and uses the fuel it is submerged in to keep it cool so it can continue doing its job without wearing out the motor inside of it. The last thing you want is for your car to sputter out and leave you stranded due to a dead fuel pump! Leaving your gas under a quarter tank also draws in debris, gunk, and rust from the bottom of your fuel tank that has the potential to clog your filter and lines, forcing the fuel pump to work harder. Slower fuel delivery also can rob you of performance and permanently affect your gas mileage.  Maybe it really is worth those few extra minutes to pull over and fill up on the way home!
